Who's Looking after Whom? The Education of Disaffected Children in Care
Sutherland, Ingrid
International Journal on School Disaffection, v5 n2 p25-31 2008
The social inclusion of vulnerable children is high on the political agenda in Britain. With policy issues concerning children in care or so-called "looked after children" (LAC) at such a pivotal point, now is the time to ensure that the educational needs of these particularly vulnerable children and young people take centre stage. It would appear the government's door is waiting to be pushed open. This article summarizes government policy initiatives to improve LAC's educational attainment, as well as changes in the law to provide them with added protection. Finally, some interesting projects in the private and public sector which are doing all that they can to try to prevent disaffection are reviewed. (Contains 15 notes.)
