Little research exists on how self-disclosure is taught in social work education (Pianko, 2001). Few social work education programs include precontemplative components of exploring identity for gay male students. In this study, the data from 4 focus groups of gay male therapists, who discussed their self-disclosure, decision-making processes, were coded and analyzed. Data analysis revealed 3 topical areas: identity creation, preparatory identity management, and relational identity management. This article describes the intention and reflection model (IRM) of identity management in gay men as it relates to precontemplative identity of gay male students in social work education. The author also recommends potential research for IRM application to additional sociocultural populations. (Contains 3 figures.)
