Parents of children on the autism spectrum often talk about a number of comorbid conditions that can accompany the disorder--immunological dysfunctions, frequent ear infections, intractable strep, gastrointestinal disorders, rampant yeast, inexplicable regressions, allergies. The author did not guess that her son would have all of those as well as epilepsy (there is an 11- to 39-percent overlap between the two conditions), or that her concerns over his seizure disorder would begin to trump her fears about everything else. In this article, she discusses how she seeks the elusive key to her son's thoughts and feelings beyond the veils of his autism and epilepsy.
