Social Networking as Educational Tool: A Community of Practice
Fritsch, Julie
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers (J3), v87 n4 p46-47 Apr 2012
Social networking sites have become such a common part of human culture that educators use them daily--whether it's to post a quick personal update, tweet a thought or great link, or blog to their students about an upcoming assignment. The National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) has taken that concept a step further, however, by creating a site--with many of the features of popular social networks--that's intended strictly for professional interaction between agriculture teachers. NAAE calls its site Communities of Practice, and it has proven to be popular. Communities of Practice is organized by topic areas, called communities, and each area is overseen by a volunteer facilitator, usually an agricultural educator, who has expertise in that area. As the site has evolved, so have the ways that individuals, universities and even states have utilized it. There are both public and private spaces within the site, so it can be used for general sharing or for groups who need to conduct business that is pertinent to only their members.
