Living in the Post-Process Writing Center

In this article, the author talks about the college writing center, which is a place of political confrontation, where cultural issues involving dialect and values are probed, contested, and negotiated. He suggests a post-process approach to composition--one that ushers writers into a world of exploration and social engagement--one that transcends the systematic, thesis-driven, implacable paper that reifies meaning. The author stresses that if educators are to help students to see writing as something that transcends acculturation into the university, they must open the discourse and show them the incredible impact of the social world in fashioning a significant piece of discourse. In his many years working in the writing center at Mott Community College, the author has found many reasons to use post-process theory and see it as integral to a pedagogy that breathes life into papers that seem to flounder in current traditional ideas of "correct prose."
