This article features Lesher Middle School, a school of choice, as are all of the schools in the Poudre School District in Ft. Collins, Colorado. In 2004, it was a traditional junior high school with a declining enrollment that housed an application-based International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) that resulted in tracking students. Today, it is a thriving middle school at capacity enrollment with 700 students, 40% of whom qualify for support, who come from 27 elementary schools. Lesher's transformation and very survival was built on the belief that to "break ranks," every adult needed to commit to the success of every child. Doing so required a major overhaul to the school's culture. Transitioning from a junior high school to a middle school provided the opportunity to examine all the beliefs and practices that were in place at Lesher.
