"Giftedness Science": Does It Exist at All?
David, Hanna
Gifted and Talented International, v27 n1 p127-132 Aug 2012
In this commentary, the author finds that the target article, "Cultural Variation and Dominance in a Globalised Knowledge-Economy: Towards a Culture-Sensitive Research Paradigm in the Science of Giftedness", has three substantial failures: (1) an unproven, even incorrect assumption about the existence of bias in the "science of giftedness" due to not taking into account cultural components; (2) an unfulfilled or undelivered declaration: to suggest a pattern to a research paradigm in this field; and (3) too many underdeveloped, mixed and sometimes unrelated subjects. The author examines each of these failures carefully. She concludes that in spite of the variety of subjects discussed, the broadness of knowledge demonstrated and the hard work done in presenting this knowledge to the reader, it leaves the reader with a feeling that the author should have concentrated on one subject, left out most of the examples and sub-issues, and concentrated on offering/suggesting a well constructed thesis with sufficient scientific strength to serve scholars in the field of giftedness.
