Some Thoughts on "Cultural Variation and Dominance in a Globalised Knowledge-Economy"
Yang, Yang; Gentry, Marcia
Gifted and Talented International, v27 n1 p123-124 Aug 2012
To view giftedness research in a global context is an important and desirable attempt. Roland S. Persson (2012a), in the target article entitled Cultural Variation and Dominance in a Globalised Knowledge-Economy: Towards a Cultural-Sensitive Research Paradigm in the Science of Giftedness, delivers thought-provoking views in the cultural influences on the research in social sciences, and in how those influences can pose threat to research in the science of giftedness. In this commentary, the authors agree that the science of giftedness is not independent from cultural contexts, and wonder if there is substantial evidence to support the assumption that giftedness research is the area dealing the least with cross-cultural issues. They also ask Persson to elaborate on some assumptions. In summary, the authors find Persson's (2012a) proposition for being culture-sensitive a timely reminder for researchers studying the science of giftedness in the era of globalisation. They wonder what role technology has and will play in promoting mutual understanding and awareness of cultural differences.
