Sustainable Schools Program and Practice: Partnership Building with the Tempe Union High School District
Koster, Auriane; Denker, Brendan
Educational Facility Planner, v46 n1 p23-27 2012
Arizona State University's (ASU) Global Institute of Sustainability (GIOS) was awarded a five-year National Science Foundation (NSF) GK-12 grant in 2009 entitled "Sustainability Science for Sustainable Schools." The general focus of the grant is on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in K-12 schools. The Sustainable Schools program specifically focuses on integrating sustainability science into the curriculum, campus and community of Phoenix area high schools. One of the strongest partnerships built over the last three years has been with Tempe High School (THS), and more recently with the Tempe Union High School District (TUHSD). This article provides an overview of the Sustainable Schools program and a discussion of the relationships developed during this period with THS and TUHSD.
