The Journey to Recovery
Reiman, Mary
School Library Monthly, v28 n4 p5-7 Jan 2012
When 250 employees of Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) in Lincoln, Nebraska, left their workspaces in the administration building on Friday, May 25, 2011, they thought the only thing that was significant was that it was the last day of the 2010-2011 school year. However, on Monday evening, May 30, 2011, during a wind and rain storm, the 90,000 square foot structure known to them as LPSDO (Lincoln Public Schools District Office) burned to the ground. Lincoln Public Schools has over 35,000 students and 3,000 teachers in a city of 275,000 in Lincoln, Nebraska. LPSDO housed the executive committee, directors, technicians, and clerical staff of the administrative division of the school district. The district staff library and processing center were also located there. The book collections included the professional library, multicultural collection, periodicals, preview books, and exceptionalities. The videos and DVDs for staff checkout were also housed in the library, as were the puppets, big books, health mannequins, and multicultural artifacts. The school district archives, the history of the district schools since the late 1800s, were also located in Library Media Services. In this article, the author discusses how they took the opportunity brought about by the catastrophe to expand their horizons and improve their work and resources on their way to recovery.
