Methods and Strategies: It's Child's Play
Leach, Jenay Sharp
Science and Children, v49 n5 p60-64 Jan 2012
After a few years of teaching high school physics to juniors and seniors, the author decided it was time for a new challenge. That was when she serendipitously saw the opening for an elementary "science resource teacher." Teaching elementary school was going to be messy, in every possible sense. The author realized that what worked for the big kids works for the little kids. In teaching science to children ages 5-18, she has found that one principle cuts across all grade levels: "children learn through play." In this article, the author suggests a novel way to use play; play used to facilitate the lesson, not as the sole method of content delivery. Play can be used with all children, grades K-12, and it should be intentional and facilitated by the expert guidance of the teacher.
