A Winning Competition
Geddes, Kim; Franchini, Elease
Science Teacher, v79 n2 p40-45 Feb 2012
As a high school physics teacher, Kim Geddes is constantly searching for new experiences to challenge, motivate, and engage students. Last year, she incorporated ExploraVision into the energy unit of her school's physics curriculum with the help of their media specialist (Elease Franchini). ExploraVision is a competition offered through a partnership between the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and Toshiba. It was found that the students were active and engaged throughout the ExploraVision process, and beamed with pride when presenting their final papers. They articulated clear, thorough answers to questions raised during their presentations. Their research efforts emphasized higher-order thinking skills, incorporated problem-based learning, used technology, and emphasized experimental design and scientific processes. Students' work also reinforced the engineering design process and critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. One goal of ExploraVision is to encourage students to imagine themselves as future scientists and engineers as they apply scientific and engineering principles to envisioning future technologies (Toshiba and NSTA 2010).
