Getting Practical
Denholm, Allie
Education in Science, n247 p15 Apr 2012
Following on from taking part in the successful "Getting Practical: improving practical work in science across the primary-secondary transition" CPD project, Uplands Community College with Wadhurst and Ticehurst Primary Schools in East Sussex worked together on developing the CPD--focusing on effective practical work across the primary-secondary transition. The schools are situated in a rural area and benefit from a long history of working together. The aims of this project were to develop a CPD package that could be used with Key Stage 2 (age 7-11) generalist teachers and Key Stage 3 (age 11-14) science teachers to enhance understanding of the science curriculum across the key stages and to further enhance the teaching of practical science through the "Hands on, minds on" approach favoured by the original "Getting Practical" CPD. The package would be trialled within the cluster and then passed on to partners in Barking and Dagenham, to trial and evaluate with teachers working in a very different setting, and who were not familiar with "Getting Practical."
