Pyrini, Nancy
American Journal of Distance Education, v26 n3 p200-207 2012
Marcie Boucouvalas, Ph.D., having worked with an array of cultures and contexts, has served for decades as professor and program director of adult learning and human resource development, Department of Human Development, at Virginia Tech's Graduate Center/National Capital Region, offering master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees to seasoned professionals from the United States and abroad. Currently she is also finalizing an online certificate program in Traumatic Brain Injury and Relearning in Adulthood framed by UNESCO's (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's) broad conceptualization of learning, which, in addition to skills development, includes ways of knowing, learning to be (in a new normal state), learning to live with others in community and communication, and the fundamental importance of learning to change. In this interview, Boucouvalas shares about her Fulbright scholarship, the project and the lessons learned from this project, and the role of social media to distance education.
