The Power of Creativity: Enhancing Academic and Personal Growth for Gifted Learners
McCollister, Karen; Sayler, Micheal F.
Understanding Our Gifted, v22 n2 p14-17 Win 2010
In order for students to learn well, someone or something must capture their interest. Novelty and intellectual challenges are good approaches for gaining attention. Imaginative strategies include storytelling, discrepant events, dressing in costumes, music, dynamic video clips, comic strips, humor, models, puppets, the element of surprise, riddles, visuals, voice changing, and many others. Once the teacher has the students' attention and has piqued their interest, she can lead them to explore deeply the topics involved. There are a number of tools teachers can use to capture the interest of their students, including synectics, Rafts, looking for patterns, and original presentations. This article discusses how teachers can employ the use of these tools in the classroom.
