"It Takes an Integrated, College-Wide Effort" and Other Lessons from Seven High Transfer Colleges
Mery, Pamela; Schiorring, Eva
Journal of Applied Research in the Community College, v18 n2 p33-41 Spr 2011
The Successful Transfer Approach Research (STAR) Project investigated seven California Community Colleges with consistently high transfer rates. Teams of experienced researchers spent two days at each college, interviewing 16-18 administrators, faculty, researchers, and student support service professionals. Focus groups and interviews were also conducted with students, faculty and counselors. This article introduces the study and its findings. Through a cross-case comparison the researchers identified six transfer-promoting factors that were in place at each of the seven colleges: robust transfer culture, student-focused environment, high level of institutional commitment, strong and strategic high school and baccalaureate connections, and effective use of support services. To make these findings useful for practitioners, the researchers developed matrices that describe: (a) the strategies, innovations and/or approaches each of the seven colleges have developed to promote each of the six transfer-promoting factors, and (b) the way the colleges are implementing these strategies, innovations and approaches.
