"Let Freedom Ring!" Black Women's Spirituality Shaping Prophetic Christian Education

The author believes that a deep sense of spirituality together with effective Christian education can be a powerful resource for equipping individuals and communities to play an active role in transforming their lives as well as oppressive systems that have impacted their communities. In her discussion of spirituality, womanist ethicist Emilie Townes asserts that womanist spirituality is a "social witness" born out of a people's "struggle and determination" to bring about healing and wholeness in light of the "work an individual does for justice." Inspired by Townes' description of womanist spirituality, the author explores the lived spiritual practices of African-American women who are deeply committed to their faith, yet they are disturbed by poverty, discrimination, violence, and multiple forms of injustice that have impacted the lives of oppressed people, especially Black women and children. She argues that a spirituality of teaching, as it emerges through the lived experiences of African-American women, implies that teaching encompasses more than the activities within the walls of the classroom. She hopes that her examination of Black women's spirituality and social justice will yield insights for developing models of prophetic Christian education. The purpose of a prophetic Christian education informed by Black women's spirituality and social activism is to help individuals nurture a deep and abiding faith while empowering them to work in partnership with God and others to bring about healing and wholeness, justice and reconciliation, liberation and social change.
