Implications of Communities of Practice in Distance Rehabilitation Education

Rehabilitation counselor education is experiencing an explosion of knowledge, which is becoming increasingly difficult to organize and disseminate to students. Communities of practice, a form of social learning, provide a way to organize and disseminate information. Distance-based education programs are increasing within the field of rehabilitation; however, due to structural restraints, these programs face unique challenges in facilitating collaborative learning among students. This article provides rehabilitation educators with a conceptual overview of communities of practice and discusses how they impact students in distance rehabilitation education programs. Recommendations are provided for facilitating distance-based, student-oriented communities of practice. (Contains 1 table.)
