Decoding the Voluntourism Process: A Case Study of the Pay It Forward Tour
Bailey, Andrew W.; Fernando, Irene K.
Journal of Experiential Education, v33 n4 p406-410 Spr 2011
"Voluntourism" refers to the use of "discretionary time and income to travel out of the sphere of regular activity to assist others in need" (McGehee & Santos, 2005, p. 760). These experiences have been shown to raise consciousness and increase interest in activism (McGehee, 2002; Wearing, 2001) and to build pro-social values, affection for others, and perspective-taking (Bailey & Russell, 2008; 2010). Although outcome studies play a vital role in establishing program value, successful programs cannot be replicated without knowledge of the key process variables. Case studies have helped to elucidate certain processes, but these studies lacked a comprehensive outcome evaluation that determined the average program impact for all participants (Lyons & Wearing, 2008). Other researchers have approached this dilemma in a variety of ways, including open coding of process variables through grounded theory (Paisley, Furman, Sibthorp, & Gookin, 2008) and through means-end analyses (Goldenberg & Pronsolino, 2008). The current study utilized a combination of schema and open coding to determine the learning mechanisms that most affected growth in outcome domains. (Contains 1 table.)
