Yours, Mine, Theirs: Multiple Generations in Today's Workplace
Grotophorst, Julie
School Business Affairs, v77 n6 p22-24 Jun 2011
For the first time in history, four distinct generations are sharing the same workspace. Veterans, Baby Boomers, Gen-Xers, and Generation Y (the Millennials) are all bringing very different life experiences, expectations, and value systems to the work table. How do leaders bridge the gap among these generations and provide common ground on which these groups can work together effectively? Understanding where members of each generation are "coming from" will help leaders work with them more effectively. Learning how to communicate with the different generations can eliminate many major confrontations and misunderstandings in the workplace. The author stresses that a manager has to understand the generational differences in employees and work to accommodate their diverse work styles.
