Skill Emphases in Rehabilitation Counselor Education Curricula
Ebener, Deborah J.
Rehabilitation Education, v21 n3 p195-204 2007
This study examines the relationship between skill emphases in rehabilitation counselor education (RCE) programs and perceived importance of those skills for counselor effectiveness. Examining results between this nationwide survey of rehabilitation counselor educators and data from an earlier research by Leahy, Chan, and Saunders (2003) that studied the importance of skills required in rehabilitation counseling practice indicate an overall consistency in relative rankings of knowledge and skill content areas between both groups. For example, Managing Cases, Practicing Professional Advocacy, and Conducting Counseling Interventions ranked as the most important skill areas in the RCE curricula and professional practice. However, statistically significant differences were found between educators' and counselors' ratings of skill importance in eight major curriculum areas. Findings are discussed in relation to previous research on competencies in RCE curricula and the Council on Rehabilitation Education's (CORE) accreditation standards for RCE programs.
