Learning to Walk: Changing Your Self, Your Perspectives, and Your Assumptions
Sullivan, Debra R.
Exchange: The Early Childhood Leaders' Magazine Since 1978, n200 p26-28 Jul-Aug 2011
Watching babies learn to walk can teach one a lot about himself/herself and one's ability to change. Changing one's self, perspectives, or assumptions requires: (1) the determination and perseverance to persist; (2) the openness to believe that if one can't change now, maybe he/she can later; (3) the ability to take a stand, even if one knows it will be difficult; (4) the understanding that it will, indeed, be hard; (5) the willingness to question one's assumptions; (6) the acceptance of temporary awkwardness; and (7) the strength to stay committed to the one's new self. Few things that are important in life are easy. Personal change may be one of the most difficult endeavors one undertakes. Just keep in mind that for most humans, personal change is possible.
