Overcoming the Education Challenge of Poverty in the Mississippi Delta
Rutherford, Angela S.; Hillmer, Tamara; Parker, Ashley
Phi Delta Kappan, v93 n3 p40-43 Nov 2011
Tunica County, Mississippi, in the heart of the delta, has been home to stagnant academic achievement even as federal and state funds increased. A teacher-focused professional development program through the University of Mississippi helped yield higher scores and national recognition for an elementary school. It also revealed some learnings: Professional development must be differentiated for teachers and job-embedded. Coaching is important and so are strong, trusting relationships between the school's teachers and leaders.
