Six teachers reflect on the meanings of a ritual of confession, sharing, and forgiveness during a school retreat. During a night of great honesty and integrity, students spoke to each other of their lives, their choices, their regrets, their wishes, and, above all, their love. During that evening, four students came out to their classmates and their teachers. The teachers developed their sense of the meaning of the event through group writing and discussion. The evening's remarkable disclosures grew out of a social justice program that is now in its tenth year. The life of this program has been cooperative, interdisciplinary, and ever open to innovation. The ritual of sharing that marks the second night of the retreat is only two years old, originally intended as a kind of indoor, urban version of the campfire sharing that marks so many outdoor retreats. It has galvanized each class that has participated, and it has amazed teachers and students alike with its honesty and soul-searching. The serial first person of this essay is an experiment in collaborative writing that reflects on an experiment in group interaction.
