Prairie Stories
Robertson, Amy; Blake, Kathryn
Science and Children, v49 n3 p48-52 Nov 2011
Stories read aloud or written by students help science come alive and engage students as active participants in their learning. Students gain a sense of place by learning about their local ecosystem by listening to stories read aloud, doing prairie-related activities, and writing stories of their own. This article describes a prairie unit that focused on unraveling and becoming a part of the stories told by prairies. This model is easily adaptable for different grade levels and every ecosystem has a story just waiting to be discovered. The authors' students learned a lot about the prairie ecosystem as they became a part of the prairie's story through exploring different author's writings, a variety of activities, and through their own writing. The students were able to incorporate this prairie unit experience into their own life stories as they collect experiences and learning that mold them into who they are. (Contains 3 figures, 12 resources and 3 online resources.)
