Institutionalization of Caring in an Era of Accountability: Creating a Supportive Environment for At-Risk Students' Retention in High School and Access to College
Carter, Hazel M.
New Educator, v8 n2 p177-193 2012
Student performance and achievement are often seen as the only indicators of school success. This emphasis on accountability and achievement exacerbates the dropout crisis in public high schools as increasing numbers of students fail to graduate on time, many of whom eventually leave school without a diploma. This article demonstrates how a well-designed program engages students and improves their retention and transition to college. It is useful to educators who are preparing to create and sustain an effective learning environment while meeting the demands to improve student achievement.
