Scientific and Policy Statements on Environmental Agents Associated with Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Gilbert, Steven G.; Miller, Elise; Martin, Joyce; Abulafia, Laura
Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability, v35 n2 p121-128 Jun 2010
Damage to the brain or nervous system at an early developmental stage creates lifelong challenges for the individual. To examine one source of harm to the developing nervous system, the Collaborative on Health and the Environment's (CHE) Learning and Developmental Disabilities Initiative (LDDI) (Collaborative on Health and the Environment, 2009) has prepared "Scientific and Policy Consensus Statements" on environmental agents associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (Gilbert, 2008; Gilbert & Miller, 2008). These statements, by leading researchers and public health professionals, document chemicals that can harm the nervous system and recommend actions for prevention. This article provides a brief overview of these scientific and policy statements, with an updated conclusion and recommendations. It is recommended that readers examine both scientific and policy consensus statements. (Contains 4 figures.)
