Project-Based Learning Engages Students in Meaningful Work
Lattimer, Heather; Riordan, Robert
Middle School Journal (J3), v43 n2 p18-23 Nov 2011
Research suggests that Project-Based Learning (PBL) can be an effective way to engage and motivate middle level learners. Thoughtfully designed and implemented PBL can be more effective than traditional instruction for teaching concept mastery in core academic disciplines, supporting long-term knowledge retention, improving mastery of 21st century skills, and preparing students to synthesize and explain concepts. However, achieving this can be challenging. Using a case study approach, this article describes the successful implementation of PBL in a middle level school that has seen dramatic student success.
