Be the Change, Live the Dream--From Day One!
Rodriguez, Kim
Library Media Connection, v30 n1 p38-40 Aug-Sep 2011
Librarians might remember that day, whether it was a month ago or over ten years ago. They may have asked themselves what they needed to know, how they should do it, how they could improve it, and, if change was needed, whether they could effect change with ease or would be met with opposition? Did they go in like lambs and become lions, or learn the lay of the land and find their place? Librarians ask much of themselves when they start something new, but what the author has learned is the importance of focusing on the needs of library users and planning carefully. The library program of the librarian's making will not happen overnight, and it probably shouldn't, because a "flash in the pan" can be costly and disappointing. The time librarians take to thoroughly plan and timely implement their ideas will reveal its reward in the achievement of their users and the longevity of their programs. The author suggests librarians begin with a plan, starting with what they know, and then learn what they need and want to know. In this article, the author shares how she did it.
