Analyzing Highway Speeding Data in the Statistics Classroom
Laumakis, Paul
Mathematics Teacher, v105 n5 p352-358 Dec 2011
When taking mathematics courses, students will sometimes ask their recurring question, "When will I ever use this in real life?" Educators are often unable to provide a direct connection between what they are teaching in the classroom and a real-life application. However, when such an opportunity does arise, they should seize it and demonstrate the usefulness of the mathematics that they are teaching. The main objective of this article is to provide an example of such a connection. It will demonstrate how statistics works in the real world by integrating various statistical methods--from descriptive techniques to linear regression to inference--to solve a real-life problem with the appropriate use of technology. (Contains 1 table and 7 figures.)
