Facilitating Hospital to School Transitions: Practices of Hospital-Based Therapists
Simon, Joan B.; Savina, Elena A.
Residential Treatment for Children & Youth, v22 n4 p49-66 2005
Mental health services are delivered to children in many settings, including inpatient psychiatric facilities. In 1997, over 280,000 children and adolescents were admitted to inpatient psychiatric settings for services related to emotional or behavioral disorders. Building a bridge between hospital and school professionals is necessary to maintain treatment improvements. This study examined the typical transition practices of inpatient therapists who are involved in the transition process. Overall, most transition practices are performed prior to a child's discharge, involve parents/caregivers, and relate to the child's diagnosis, academic behaviors, and interpersonal relationships. Practical implications and ideas for future research in this area are presented. (Contains 4 tables.)
