Challenge and Response in Jewish Education
Krakowski, Moshe
Journal of Jewish Education, v77 n4 p307-325 2011
This essay reviews the Applications section of the "International Handbook of Jewish Education" published in 2011. Because of the variety of contexts in which Jewish education research can be applied, this section comprises a large number of diverse chapters that are not all explicitly theoretically or thematically linked. The scope of this material may be overwhelming to readers wishing to emerge with a clear picture of the state of contemporary Jewish education. The author begins with a sketch of the total educational world depicted in this section. When taken together, these chapters provide a powerful and coherent testimony of the substantial developments that have occurred in the field and on the ground, as well as the significant challenges Jewish researchers and educators continue to face. The author discusses these issues according to the central themes that emerge from this section, and closes by examining several areas of Jewish research that require more attention than they have received, and that may serve to address persistent challenges. (Contains 4 footnotes.)
