Revelations from Partners in Active Learning Support (PALS) Leaders and Mentors: Considerations for Developing Peer Programs
Tindall, Judith A.; Black, David R.; Spight, Damon L.
Perspectives in Peer Programs, v20 n3 p93-115 Spr-Sum 2007
The National FFA Organization's Partners in Active Learning Support (PALS) is a program that utilizes high school members from FFA chapters as peer mentors. The purpose of this study was to examine needs of a sample of PALS advisors and mentors. An on-site pilot study was initially conducted, which included 3 individual interviews with program advisors and focus groups for 23 PALS mentors. Pilot study data were used to revise the interview plan and materials before conducting a larger needs assessment at the National FFA Organization's national convention in the fall of 2005. A total of 7 PALS advisors and 38 PALS mentors participated in the larger study. Five distinct themes emerged from the interviews: Training, communication, connection, curriculum, and evaluation. Recommendations were provided to enhance the current PALS program based on those five themes.
