In 2006, Marcus du Sautoy delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures on the subject of mathematics. From this, a workshop was created using ideas illustrated in the programme. A group of mathematical students from the University of Oxford, known as Marcus' Marvellous Mathemagicians, were trained in this workshop and now travel to schools delivering the presentation. Since the demand for the presentation has grown, the authors have decided to document these games, which can be demonstrated easily in the classroom environment. Each game illustrates a different principle and allows students to engage with mathematics through experimentation and formulation of strategies. It is hoped that through experimentation the participants are able to formulate and refine their ideas more easily than simply using theoretical structures.
