Making Ripples of Hope

Hope, the ideas and energy for the future, is one of the most potent predictors of the success of the youth. Based on the Gallup Student Poll, an online school-based measure of student hope (and engagement and well-being), half of American students are hopeful. Hopeful students are energetic, full of life. They're able to develop many strategies to reach goals and plan contingencies in the event that they face problems along the way. Stuck or discouraged students may lack the energy to get things done. These students may give up when encountering barriers to goals simply because they can't think of other pathways around the obstacles or can't get the support they need. Helping students become more hopeful can improve their ability to learn, as well as make them more resilient for future challenges. Those hopeful principals and teachers spread hope by encouraging autonomy, modeling a hopeful lifestyle, promoting strengths-based development, and telling stories about how students and educators overcome big obstacles to realize important goals. Spreading hope is not necessarily a top-down task. A teacher or counselor could lead the effort just as well as a principal. Ideally, all staff members, regardless of job title, assume a role in spreading hope throughout a school by: (1) creating excitement about the future; and (2) teaching numerous strategies for getting good grades and solving problems.
