As someone who has dabbled in biography and autobiography, the author knows how difficult it is to determine what really happened and why. Even people who agree on the sequence of events, and describe them similarly, may end up creating quite different narratives of a given life. Intellectual autobiography may be somewhat less problematic, because there is at least a sizeable paper (or, today, digital) trail that can be examined for corroboration. On this occasion, the author is abjuring an "objective" account of what happened in favor of a more personal recollection of the evolution of his ideas over the decades. Following considerable research and reflection, he and his colleagues have come to see good work as composed of three strands: It is technically "excellent," it is personally "engaging," and it is carried out in an "ethical" manner. Although all three of these "E"s are important, he and his colleagues have had a special interest in the ethical dimension of work, and, in particular, work in the professions.
