What Do We Mean by Civic Engagement as It Relates to Teacher Education?

Teacher educators are supposed to ensure that their preservice candidates and practitioners are equipped with the content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and dispositions that will help to create effective classroom teachers who serve as models of civic engagement for their students. Civic engagement is understood as being the act of making a difference in the political and nonpolitical civic life of a community. In essence, it allows citizens to implement, in the daily operations of society, the democratic and educational values they hold and learned in school. Three types of citizens demonstrate civic engagement: (1) personally responsible; (2) participatory; and (3) justice-oriented citizens. In this article, the author discusses civic engagement as it relates to teacher education. She stresses that teacher preparation programs can prepare candidates and practitioners to teach for civic engagement if the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of civic education are incorporated in the explicit and implicit curricula.
