"It Planted the Seeds:" A Retrospective Study of Jewish Family Education's Impact on Families
Shevitz, Susan; Koren, Annette
Journal of Jewish Education, v70 n3 p40-49 2004
Since 1993, Boston's Jewish community has supported "Sh'arim," a regional initiative in Jewish family education (JFE). This paper examines parents' perceptions of the impact of that initiative on their children, themselves and their families as a whole over the past 10 years. After briefly describing the initiative's original goals, approaches and the ongoing research associated with it, the paper analyzes data from focus groups made up of parents whose families were involved with JFE over the last ten years. The data indicate that families appreciate JFE as a vehicle for creating community, involving them in the Jewish education of their children and as an entry point and ongoing locus for their own Jewish learning. Finally, the authors present implications of the research for the work of JFE as it goes forward. (Contains 12 footnotes.)
