Consultation to the EHS Consultants
Pawl, Jeree H.
Zero to Three (J), v24 n6 p33-38 Jul 2004
The Pathways to Prevention (PTP) initiative was designed to help selected Early Head Start (EHS) programs enhance their mental health services for infants and toddlers by learning to work with infant mental health consultants. PTP engaged the author to provide support to the infant mental health consultants through regular group consultation via conference phone calls. The author uses an account of her consultation to the EHS consultants to (a) evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of using this consultant-to-the consultants model; and (b) describe common ideas and issues about infant mental health consultation encountered during the PTP initiative. She argues that the consultant's first task is to listen, think, and respond collaboratively and respectfully--and to know that "how you 'are'" will matter first, to be joined only later by what you "know."
