Using Technology in Consultation: Enhancing Relationships
Pease, Terrie; Copa, Annette; Proulx, Gregory A.; Boss, Jennifer
Zero to Three (J), v24 n6 p20-25 Jul 2004
Jennifer Boss, Senior Program Associate at ZERO TO THREE, spoke with three infant mental health consultants who worked with three different Early Head Start programs as part of the Pathways to Prevention (PTP) initiative. The interviews particularly focused on how to infuse technology into consultation arrangements that center around building and supporting relationships. The consultants discuss teleconferencing as an effective means to foster relationships among consultants and staff when travel is too costly or not possible. Annette Copa of Wisconsin's Portage Project notes that although it is difficult to sustain a personal connection over the phone, occasional on-site visits allow her to form a mental picture of faces, tones, and mannerisms, thus making it easier to connect via teleconferencing. Videotaping was cited as another technological aid, and Terri Pease of Massachusetts' SPIN USA uses video to help home visitors analyze their interactions with parents and children. She edits the tape to break down the most successful interventions into tiny components that can be taught, internalized, and used again and again. Other technological advancements, such as satellite communication, are also mentioned as a means to cultivate long-distance interaction. The consultants' conclude that infant mental health consultants should use the technology that best supports their goals and should approach the idea of using technology in consultation with a sense of exploring possibilities rather than assuming it will be difficult or a failure.
