How a Trip to the Freezer Can Help Children Learn Science

There are lots of exciting ways for children to learn science. Going on a journey is one of them. However, when going to distant places is not possible, a virtual journey may be the next best option. Ricky, one of the authors' puppets, helps children to make virtual journeys, and this can create an exciting context for them to raise questions and investigate science problems. The records of these journeys can also provide a source of problems, questions and images that can stimulate science in one's class. Ricky's most recent journey was to the freezing conditions of Antarctica, accompanied by Primary Science Teacher of the Year, Lisa Wood. In this article the authors offer a small glimpse into Ricky's adventures and the science enquiries that children carried out to help him. (Contains 4 figures, 2 boxes, and 4 online resources.)
