International Journal for Technology in Mathematics Education, v18 n2 p61-70 2011
Many researchers claim that children from a very young age form intuitive conceptions of probability, which may be adapted through properly designed learning activities. In addition, the random number generators as well as the dynamic interactive representations offered by digital technologies, open up new possibilities in learning probability concepts. In this paper, we present a case study regarding the influence that a specially designed computer microworld had on the development of intuitive conceptions about probability. The proposed microworld is based on the total of two dice while the study of its effects regards kindergarten children. The experiential findings support the learning value of the proposed microworld. In addition, the proposed learning activity facilitates the diagnosis of primary and the development of secondary intuitive conceptions about probabilistic concepts.
