TeachArt Wiki: A Collaborative, Interactive, and Dialogic Platform for Teaching and Learning Art

Art Education, v64 n4 p48-53 Jul 2011
In classrooms where lecture is the method of instruction, information often is transmitted with little or no dialogue from a person who possesses knowledge (such as an instructor) to a person who lacks knowledge (such as a student). The authors found this instructional model to be limited. As a result, they integrated second-generation Web or "Web 2.0" technology as part of their teaching to break away from didacticism, facilitate collaborative knowledge construction, and help students interact with the world outside the classroom. Unlike the "read-only" first-generation Web, or "Web 1.0", the innovative technologies of "read-and-write" Web 2.0 provide abundant tools for users to collaborate in a non-hierarchical fashion, and to construct knowledge together through negotiation and dialogue. This article discusses the authors' use of Web 2.0 technology in the form of a Wiki and its educational impact on students. They first define Web 2.0, their understanding of a Wiki as a social learning tool, and how they used it in their classrooms. They then discuss the effects of TeachArt Wiki assignments on their students' learning, as well as related issues raised in their classrooms. (Contains 3 endnotes.)
