Global Greetings: Technology Invites an Institution's Extended Family to Campus Events
VandenBerg, Patricia
CURRENTS, v37 n4 p44-47 Apr 2011
On September 24, 2010, a group of about 20 women from across Europe have gathered at the University Women's Club. All eyes are on a large screen projecting streaming video from the Mount Holyoke College website. Photos of the Massachusetts campus flash by as the sound of an a capella group singing "Bread and Roses" fills the room. Soon, video greetings and well wishes from alumnae in Germany, Switzerland, India, the Philippines, and the United States fill the screen. Although this alumnae gathering was unlike any event previously held in the history of the world's oldest institution of higher education for women, it was an experience shared by thousands in times zones around the world. Alumnae, parents, friends, and students congregated online to watch in real time the inauguration of the college's 18th president, Lynn Pasquerella, an MHC alumna. In the nearly 15 years since the college's 17th president was inaugurated, the number of international students has increased significantly and changed the composition of the student body and the alumnae association. The inauguration presented a valuable opportunity to engage, and in some cases re-engage, the college's constituencies worldwide. In this article, the author discusses how today's communication devices and technologies helped transform an on-campus activity into a global event.
