Using a Modified Programmed Practice Sheet to Promote Skill Learning and Assessment
Johnson, Tyler G.; Bell, Kenneth W.; Prusak, Keven A.
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v24 n6 p16-19 Jul-Aug 2011
Many physical educators have asked "how do I help my students become skilled?" Most would likely respond with one word, "practice." Teachers' belief systems tell them if students practice sufficiently the product of more skillful play will be attained. It's likely that students believe this too. They know that in order to play the game better, they must practice. In addition, the pressure to adequately assess student learning based on national and/or state standards creates challenges for many physical education teachers. Thus, the purpose of this article is to describe a tool to help physical educators overcome the obstacles of skill learning and assessment in physical education. Although the ideas presented in this manuscript are not new, they are meant to provide a reminder to physical educators about the importance of using different teaching styles and strategies to facilitate skill learning and assessment.
