It is well established that children are already learning science before entering school as they actively construct meaning from the world around them. Using children's previous and personal experiences to engage them with new and unfamiliar concepts can be a powerful tool, and their motivation to learn will increase if they see how the science they learn at school relates to their daily lives. The home is one example of such a context for meaningful learning. It has the potential to be an exciting, relevant and accessible resource for developing some key ideas in primary science. The ideas presented in this article aim to serve as a gentle reminder that, with a little thought and preparation, one can provide stimulating and engaging experiences for children without the need to rely on worksheets or textbooks.
