A Creative Science Experience
Overton, Dave
Primary Science Review, n81 p21-24 Jan-Feb 2004
As a Teaching Awards Regional Winner in 2002, the author was recently awarded funding by Planet Science (NESTA) for projects to disseminate best practice. One of the things he had in mind was to organise a "creative science event." So last July year 4 children from Chiltern Primary School, Hull, joined a class of year 5 children from Whitehill Primary School, Brinsworth, Rotherham, for a creative science event in Durham. The children and accompanying teachers spent an afternoon investigating Killhope Lead Mining Centre. Guides showed them the mine, woodland and reservoir, mining machinery and miners' accommodation. It was a hands-on experience and everyone had a great time. This was followed by a morning of related activities linking science and the arts. All participants, most importantly the children, thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learned a great deal. Most learning styles were catered for. The teachers were eager to take the activities back into their schools and to develop their own ideas based on what they had seen. (Contains 1 table.)
