Management in Training
Babick, Christine
CURRENTS, v35 n2 p32-37 Feb 2009
Advancement offices have their share of management issues. Do any of these situations sound familiar? An underachieving alumni director should have been let go long ago, but without a single bad performance review, he can't be fired. A development officer hires the wrong person and now spends too much time supervising her. A high-performing fundraiser is promoted to management but can't seem to inspire the same high performance in others. The single biggest issue advancement professionals and their managers face is lack of management and leadership training. The leadership problem affects many aspects of advancement, most notably job satisfaction and retention in development. Communication can, ironically, be another weakness. This article presents the opinions of experts on the best strategies to tackle the knottiest management problems in advancement, including attracting and keeping star performers, motivating people, and training effective leaders.
