Individually, each statistic is staggering: (1) $150 million raised in a single month; (2) More than $500 million in donations in 21 months from 3 million donors; (3) 6 million donations of $100 or less in 21 months; (4) An e-mail database of 10 million supporters; (5) Nearly a million friends on Facebook; and (6) 14 million views of a music video based on a campaign speech. But together, these numbers underscore why Barack Obama's presidential campaign is far more than a new chapter in the U.S. history books. This article takes a closer look at the presidential campaign of Obama, which merged old-fashioned grass-roots politics with new technology, shattered fundraising records, and energized millions of supporters, and explores the ways in which its lessons can be used by advancement professionals.
