Predictors of Sexual Risk Behavior among Zimbabwean Adolescents With and Without Disabilities: Implications for HIV/AIDS Prevention
Magaya, Lindiwe
Journal of International Special Needs Education, v13 p14-22 2010
The purpose of this study was to determine sexual risk behaviors among Zimbabwean adolescents with and without disabilities. Participants included 456 Zimbabwean high school students. Results indicated that more males than females engaged in sexual activities as early as nine years of age or younger. Females who reported having had sex, also reported engaging in sex more frequently than males. Adolescents with disabilities reported having more than one sex partner and having significantly less intentions to try practicing safer sex. The presence or absence of a disability significantly influenced sexual risk behavior more so than having AIDS knowledge. Significant predictors of sexual risk behavior were age, age at coitus, frequency of sexual activity, track, and having a disability. Results of this study imply that having AIDS knowledge does not necessarily translate into safer sex, rather, the psychological processes involved in negotiating the sexual scene need to be developed in adolescents. Sexuality education needs to be culturally and sensitively addressed at an early age and should target both adolescents with and without disabilities. (Contains 3 tables.)
